The Samford Bulldogs, just two seasons removed from facing Kansas in the NCAA Tournament, are once again positioned to make noise. In his first year at the helm, Coach Lennie Acuff has the Bulldogs trending upward and in position to make a serious run in Asheville at the SoCon Tournament. Last night they won their 10th game at the Pete Hanna this season improving their home record to 10-3 and currently sit 3rd in the SoCon.

At this point, it shouldn’t be surprising that student turnout hasn’t matched the team’s success. Even during the Bucky McMillan era, when Samford was winning at an unprecedented level, student engagement remained largely indifferent.

Last season, Bucky emphasized the importance of students taking pride in their school.

Bucky even went as far as creating a group message with the entire student body and offering incentives including cash, an Apple Watch, and even a new TV to encourage students to come support the team. It should not require that level of effort to inspire pride in your own school.

UAB faces similar issues with their student body. Jelly Walker, Trey Jemison and Yaxel Lendeborg all played dozens of games in Birmingham and students were indifferent.

Reason to attend Samford’s last home game: Jadin Booth leads the country in 3-pointers per game and Dylan Faulkner is ranked 25th in the most double-doubles per game.

Before the season even tipped off, Samford Basketball went into the community with a message: this is your team, Homewood.

Coach Lennie Acuff said this group would be worth rooting for. He was right.

Now it’s time for Homewood to respond.

The No. 1 three-point shooter in the country is playing at the Pete Hanna Center. One of the nation’s top 25 leaders in double-doubles is anchoring the paint. This isn’t hypothetical talent — it’s happening right here.

If you’re a student or live anywhere in the Birmingham area, this team is worth your time.

Be at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday at 5:00 PM. Show up. Pack it out. Support your team.
