BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a Southern Conference thriller that came down to the final possession, the Samford Bulldogs fell just short at home, losing 76-75 to the ETSU Buccaneers on a put-back with seconds remaining at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday afternoon.
It was a game defined by momentum swings, stingy paint defense by ETSU, and scorching perimeter shooting by Samford — and in the end, by a single pivotal rebound.
“Fantastic basketball game,” Samford head coach Lennie Acuff said in the postgame press conference. “Both teams played really well… obviously they’re very good. They have a lot of firepower and they showed it today.” The Bulldogs led for only short stretches, but battled back repeatedly and had a chance to win it in the final seconds.
ETSU’s Blake Barkley was dominant, scoring 26 points on just 10 shots and adding 11 rebounds to lead the Buccaneers in a performance that proved the difference. Meanwhile, Samford countered with a red-hot performance from three, hitting 14 of 32 attempts and finishing with 17 assists against six turnovers — snapshotting an offense that looked crisp and unafraid.
“That’s about as good as we can play offensively,” Coach Acuff said. “14 for 32 from three… if you move the ball, you share it, you get to the paint… they go in when you get open looks.”
Senior guard Jadin Booth led the Bulldogs with 19 points, dishing five assists while contributing defensively with two steals. Brothers Cade and Keaton Norris combined for 30 points, anchoring Samford’s second-half resurgence.

Paint Battle & Key Moments
A decisive factor in the game was ETSU’s dominance inside. The Buccaneers outscored Samford 40-18 in the paint, often using their physicality to draw fouls and score inside. That included a perfect 16-for-17 night from the free throw line, something the Samford coach lamented postgame.
“If any of you guys have any ideas on how we can improve our free throw defense… I’d like to know,” Acuff said with a laugh. “They just show up and make ’em all.”
The Bulldogs briefly grabbed their first second-half lead, but ETSU answered with an 8-0 run in just 90 seconds to swing momentum. Samford had one final chance, but ETSU secured the rebound, and Barkley finished a put-back that gave the Buccaneers the one-point edge in the closing moments.
Locker Room & Looking Ahead
Asked how he handles the emotions in the locker room after a loss like this, Samford’s coach emphasized perspective.
“You gotta let it breathe a little bit,” he said. “The less said the better. You just have to embrace the hard things in life. The path’s gonna be hard, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Even in defeat, there were clear positives: sharper ball movement, a strong bench impact from Jaxon Pollard, and a significant step forward shooting from beyond the arc. The Dylan Faulkner–Jadin Booth duo continues to be must-watch, and this Samford team is very much worth your attention.
The SoCon Tournament feels wide open. Furman and ETSU may enter as favorites, but Samford has shown that when things align, they’re capable of beating anyone in the league.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday at Wofford, looking to bounce back and build on the progress shown in a narrow loss.
