December 16, 2025 — the day the Stallions dynasty ended.
You can’t tell the story of spring football without Skip Holtz and the Birmingham Stallions. No one has won more, in less time. Holtz leaves Birmingham as a three-time spring football champion with a 39–8 record. Even more impressive: each championship came with a different quarterback.
With everything Skip Holtz accomplished as the head coach of Alabama’s professional team, it raises the question of whether he deserves a spot in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He was nominated for the Class of 2024.
What is next for Skip Holtz and will he implement his famous t-formation?
While it’s unclear what Coach Holtz’s next move will be, he hasn’t ruled out a return to college football. Back in July, he said this:
No matter where Coach Holtz lands, we know he will continue to win with his dynamic offense and funny lines.
Coach Holtz on the t-formation aka the t-bone:
I leave you with this well written letter to Coach Holtz from Luke Miller of State of the Stallions:
Coach Holtz,
In 2022, you chose to take a risk on a new professional football team in an upstart league. No one could have imagined what would come next.
- 3 Consecutive Championships: USFL (2022, 2023) and the inaugural UFL Championship (2024).
- A staggering 39-8 overall record: 33–7 in the regular-season and 6–1 in the postseason.
- 2023 Coach of the Year
- 2 Consecutive League MVPs: QB Alex McGough in 2023 (USFL) and QB Adrian Martinez in 2024 (UFL)
What made it all so impressive was your ability to win no matter the circumstances. Even in your final season, when injuries forced the team to rotate through 5 different QBs in a 10 game season, you still willed the team to a 7-3 record and a conference regular-season title.
You didn’t just coach a football team; you built one of the greatest dynasties in the modern era of sports. You will go down in history as the greatest spring football coach of all time.
What meant the most to all of us in Birmingham, though, was your love and loyalty. In the transient world of spring football, where coaches and players come and go yearly, stability is a myth.
Or at least it was, until you arrived in Birmingham.
Despite being underpaid for the value you brought to the league, you turned down opportunity after opportunity to stay here and building something special. “Giddy Up” wasn’t just a catchphrase; it became a rallying cry. In a state dominated by collegiate athletics, you helped grow a genuinely passionate fanbase for professional football. You never saw this as just an easy paycheck; you gave us your very best day in and day out. In turn, Birmingham became synonymous with spring football.
We can’t thank you enough. You gave spring football legitimacy, you gave Birmingham a dynasty, and you showed us all what it looks like to pursue excellence each and every day.
“The Spring King” will always have a home in Birmingham.
Giddy Up ❤️
