Birmingham Stallions fans were finally able to meet new head coach AJ McCarron in person at the team’s Fan Rally event today. It was originally scheduled for January 24th, but was delayed by the winter storm that swept across much of the eastern United States. McCarron was joined by multiple Stallions players: veteran safety JoJo Tillery, previous DC Defender guard Mason Brooks, and former Samford quarterback Michael Hiers.

The group held a lengthy autograph session and signed all sorts of posters, footballs, and jerseys for fans. Afterwards, a Q&A was conducted to help fans get to know the team. Topics ranged from season goals, best barbecue in Alabama (McCarron stayed faithful to his Tuscaloosa roots with a Dreamland shoutout), and the importance of getting fans out to the games.

“I think the biggest thing is [the fans] coming out to support us, to support these guys because that’s what keeps us here,” McCarron commented. However, he also recognized everyone that showed up and called out UFL owner Mike Repole to take notice, “I think, if anything, all the fans coming out today proves a little something to Mike Repole that says ‘hey, look at us now.’”

One of the biggest issues lobbed against the Stallions in the offseason has been their in-game attendance. When discussions of the team being moved were being held, attendance was one of the major talking points. For a team that has won three league championships and has had two spring league MVPs, attendance hasn’t always reflected the product on the field. However, Stallions faithful bucked that trend today as the event was packed.

Aside from meeting the players and head coach, there was plenty of food, drinks, and giveaways. None of the hundreds of fans that showed up could have left empty handed had they tried. All this while overlooking Protective Stadium, even if still prepared for Legion FC soccer play, helped build a sense of excitement for the upcoming season.

The Birmingham Stallions seek to bring their fourth spring football championship home this season. They start their schedule on the road, facing off against the Louisville Kings on March 27th. Fans will have to wait until April 18th to see their Stallions first game at home when they take on the Orlando Storm in Protective Stadium.
